E is for Experience
Most of us, when we get into a relationship, we have to learn together all the ins and outs through fights, squabbles, and hurt feelings. Wouldn't it be nice to have someone a bit more experienced to help guide you through? It's one of the reasons in my In Hyacinth series that I have the heroes being around 10 years older than their female counterparts. Another reason is it is well known that women mature faster than men.
I enjoy reading books where the hero is older than the heroine...to a certain level. Strangely enough, I'm not that fond of it in real life. All my life, I've had guys 20+ years older than myself interested in me. Which is kind of gross, especially when you realize I always look about 10-15 years younger than I am.
Kathy, from Courted by Discipline is a bit upset when she finds out the guys wanting to court her will be older than she is.
Kathy’s mouth opened several times, but gathering her thoughts enough to make intelligent words took some time. Thankfully her parents waited until she could. “But we just moved here. Surely they would wait until I could get to know some of the men.”
Gerald shook his head. “Unfortunately not. For one thing, most of the girls might know of the men who court them, but they don’t usually know them personally. A decade’s difference in age keeps them apart. For another, I know you are mature enough to handle this. This isn’t some kind of death sentence, honey. I would never okay some jerk taking out my daughter. You know that.”
“A decade?” she asked in shock. “They’re ten years older than me?” Eww. That was so old.
His lips twitching in what looked like amusement, her father nodded. “The men can’t enter the courting system until they prove they can support a family. Until they reach their mid-to-late twenties, that truly isn’t possible.”
Hyacinth, Washington is all about traditional values. In Hyacinth; its residents live their lives by discipline; there is a strong male head of house; and words like trust, honor, and kindness aren't just buzzwords. Each story in the series is of a young woman (18-20) and her struggle to figure out who she is in this little town while at the same time going through Hyacinth's old-fashioned courting system. On their way to meet, get to know, and finally marry their princes, these heroines grow in ways they and their town never expected.
