M is for Memorial Day Picnic
Given the fact that the Memorial Day Picnic is such a huge deal in Hyacinth, I thought I'd use it for M. The Memorial Day Picnic takes place on the last Sunday in May every year and is the town's largest event. Not only does everyone take part, but it kicks off courting season with all the new courtable girls out in droves. It's fun, quirky, and with each new writing of it, I find new and interesting things.
There is a cabin in the middle of Hyacinth park that is soundproofed and was created so that if a family member was being particularly bad tempered during a town event, they could be taken inside and disciplined.
While there are large patches of grass, there are also trees everywhere and if one wants to hide and not see anyone, they can use the trees to do so.
Everyone wears shorts or jeans and t-shirts except for the courtables who are usually all dressed up. (I don't know about you, but I probably would have ended up in the cabin if someone had made me wear a dress to a picnic.)
Hyacinth, Washington is all about traditional values. In Hyacinth; its residents live their lives by discipline; there is a strong male head of house; and words like trust, honor, and kindness aren't just buzzwords. Each story in the series is of a young woman (18-20) and her struggle to figure out who she is in this little town while at the same time going through Hyacinth's old-fashioned courting system. On their way to meet, get to know, and finally marry their princes, these heroines grow in ways they and their town never expected.
